Calypso Grand Oasis was conceived as a counterpoint to the coast: a calm, generous, beautifully finished home set back from the crowds, where the loudest sound most evenings is the church bell across the square. Inside, a bright open-plan kitchen, dining and living area runs the width of the apartment, opening onto the balcony through full-height glazing. Three spacious bedrooms sit off a private hallway, each with air conditioning and wardrobe space designed for a real holiday rather than a weekend. The bathrooms are sleek, stone-tiled and softly lit. Everything is new, everything works, and nothing shouts.

Long before the temples, before the salt pans and the church bells, this island had another name. Homer called it Ogygia — the navel of the sea — and it belonged to a nymph named Calypso.
When Odysseus was washed ashore, storm-broken and alone, she found him on the red sand of Ramla Bay and carried him up to her cave in the ridge above. There she offered him what no mortal had ever been offered: a life without ageing, without ending, spent in the hush of a place the world had forgotten.
“Rest now, sea-weary man. No storm can follow you here. The sea has taken enough from you — let the island give it back. Stay, and the years will never touch you. Stay, and I will love you as no mortal woman can.”
For seven years he stayed. The sea kept its hour, the cave kept its cool, and Gozo did what Gozo still does — it slowed a restless man down until he could hear himself think.
But the gods decreed he must return to Ithaca, and even a nymph cannot argue with the sky. On the morning of his leaving, she walked with him to the shore, and her voice was softer than the tide.
“Go then, if your heart pulls harder than my arms. I will not chain what the sea has taught to wander. But when the wide water wearies you, remember this shore. Remember the island that kept you… and the nymph who let you leave.”
In the end he chose the long road home, and she let him go. But the island kept her name. Stand at the mouth of Calypso's Cave at dusk, with Ramla glowing copper below and the wind coming off the water, and it is not difficult to understand why he lingered.

What a week at Calypso Grand Oasis feels like.
Xagħra sits on a plateau above the north coast, and that geography defines the stay. The village is high, dry and breezy, built around a square with a basilica, two band clubs, a handful of cafés and a bakery that opens early. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the Maltese islands, and it feels it — narrow lanes of honey limestone, front doors painted deep green, and a pace that has never particularly wanted to change. The apartment is a few minutes' walk from all of it, on a street where the only traffic is residents coming home.
Mornings tend to start on the balcony with coffee from the machine in the kitchen, then either a short walk to the Ġgantija Temples before the coaches arrive, or the drive down to Ramla Bay, where the sand really is red and the water shelves gently enough for children. Afternoons are for the cool of the apartment — the walls are thick, the air conditioning is quiet, and the living room stays comfortable through the hottest part of an August day. Evenings mean Marsalforn for seafood on the promenade, Victoria for the Citadel and its restaurants, or simply the table for six at home with something from the village grocer.
The layout suits families and two couples travelling together equally well. Three bedrooms off a private hallway mean nobody walks through anybody else's room; the open-plan living space gives everyone somewhere to gather without feeling on top of one another. Wardrobe space is unusually generous for a holiday let, which matters on a two-week stay. A travel cot can be set up before you arrive, and the single-level layout means no internal stairs to worry about with a toddler.
Getting here is simple: roughly forty minutes from Malta International Airport to the Ċirkewwa ferry, twenty-five minutes across the channel to Mġarr, then fifteen minutes by road up to Xagħra. A car is the easiest way to enjoy this side of the island, though the bus from Victoria runs regularly and the village has everything you need day to day. Free parking is available on the street outside.
